From Portland Biz Journal.
The Occupy Portland camp will be evicted from two downtown Portland parks by Sunday.
Portland Mayor Sam Adams and Police Chief Mike Reese announced Thursday that the city will move to clear Chapman and Lownsdale squares near Southwest Fourth Avenue and Main Street in downtown Portland at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, saying recent incidents have made the atmosphere there unsafe.
Occupy Portland leaders planned to hold an emergency general assembly meeting at noon Thursday to discuss the order.
Adriane DeJerk, an Occupy Portland liaison to the city, said the group “will figure out a strategic response to the city’s strategy” at the general assembly.
“Some here are agitated by the announcement, some aren’t,” DeJerk said, adding that finding a solution to the conflict “is entirely possible.”
The encampment was established Oct. 6 after a 10,000-person march through Portland and at one point swelled to more than 300 tents and 500 campers.
But recent drug and violence incidents prompted once-patient city officials to take action.
