On February 14th a group of about 20 people dressed in black gathered outside the Donald E. Long Juvenile Detention Center in Portland. We banged on pots, pans, buckets, and various other improvised noisemakers for about an hour and a half to let the people inside know that the had not been forgotten. Kids inside the jail were seen pounding on windows, giving thumbs up, and holding signs in the windows that read “fuck pigs.” At one point there was a massive two-person paper mache dragon with light-up eyes and nostrils spewing silly string out of its mouth. That was totally unexpected and awesome, and definitely brought up everyone’s spirits. A banner reading “Prisons are the new plantations – freedom 4 everyone” was hung over the wall facing the cells. The lid to a trashcan was thrown over the outer wall, taking out one of the metal props for the (unelectrified) double wire running the perimeter of the wall.
In solidarity with prisoners everywhere! Until all are free!
