Black Bloc and the Occupy Movement

Eric Holdeman

The Occupy Wall Street movement was something that dominated 2011 domestic news.  On the surface it appeared to be an amalgamation of people and movements fed up with the situation of no jobs, foreclosed on homes, etc.  The movement spread with other cities picking up the banner and having their own encampments.

Recently I became aware of another element, some would say the instigators, of the Occupy movement.  This being the Black Bloc  The tactics used by this group are not non-violent and their work can be traced by a trail of broken windows and vandalized properties.  These are typically the younger generation who wear all black clothing, conceal their faces and use otherwise peaceful marches for the cover of their destructive tactics.  We saw this type of tactic used in Seattle for the May Day march.

Interesting there is another group that has sprung up as a counter to the more violent nature of the above protests.  This is the The 99% Spring movement that is gaining traction with those who favor nonviolent protest.  In this case there is significant union support behind this group’s launching.

I share the above for your general information.  I suggest you pay attention to these movements to understand “who’s who in the zoo” of protest movements and to also pay particular attention to the Black Bloc and what their objectives might be.  With the presidential political conventions happening this summer I’m sure we’ll have some significant demonstrations in the convention cities and beyond.
